19. Movement as Medicine
LISTEN HERE
The Three Main Topics covered today are:
The psychology of workouts, and why they’re not ‘working out’ for your long-term
Presence, Pleasure & Movement - The Reason for Yo-Yo weight fluctuation
How a Presence-based practice can shift your workouts into (much needed) Medicine.
I’ve been moving since I could remember. I remember when I was about 10 years old, I was swimming laps in the pool for over an hour. Non-stop. I had an older man approach me, asking me if I was training for the Junior Olympics.
I’ve been teaching since my teen years as a dancer. My passion later evolved to become a professional dancer and then a professional fitness educator.
I eventually moved to NYC and was one of those fitness class fanatics! My aim was to take as many classes as possible, with as many teachers and backgrounds as possible. Eventually, of course, I ran into a lot of extreme fatigue, overworking my body and feeling completely disconnected from the Wisdom of my body.
At the height of my spiritual awakening, I was called to take a break. And with that, came a lot of non-movement.
Hours upon hours of meditation, seated, then having to integrate and feel completely out of the body.
I lost touch with workouts. They became chores, one more thing to do.
And anyone on the spiritual path knows, that at some point, what your body looks like or weighs is completely irrelevant because there’s this whole other universe inside your awakening that seems so much more important than the physical. At least that was how I felt.
I became disconnected from working out because I had no desire to lose weight or attain the things workouts promise to give you.
Workouts became my job and I became tired of them. I felt like a juke-box every time I taught or tried taking a class. The same thing, over and over the thing. Movement was homework, and no one likes homework.
So I took a break. I decided to stop teaching. I’d take a class here and there but I was completely devoted to everything else happening in my reality.
Eventually, of course, my body began to deteriorate. I began to gain weight, I felt lethargic. I had Bone and joint pain. I had no strength.
At some point, I realized that the only life I could live was one and that ONE life had to merge both spiritual and physical Celeste.
It could never be either-or, it doesn’t work that way. I realized I had lost connection to my first true love, movement because there was no purpose of workouts outside of what I had been sold, the extreme measures of physical validation.
The Psychology of workouts, and why they’re not ‘working out’ for your long-term
Why do we see our workouts as chores instead of opportunities?
Perhaps because there is something inherently wrong with our approach towards Fitness.
But how did this all start?
I believe in this modern-day age with sensual-stimulation skyrocketing more and more every day, we are training our senses to be at an all-time high.
We’ve made workouts all about ‘working-out’ the things we don’t like about ourselves, instead of working-through the Present moment and acknowledging where we are Right Now.
When we approach movement as MEDICINE and not as a scapegoat to get this type of body or that type of validation, things start to change.
When movement becomes about results, instead of presence, we lose the whole point, we lose the purpose of movement.
Why the yo-yo weight cycles? Presence, Pleasure & Movement
Pleasure & reconnecting to the Intelligence of the Body is a big part of what I do.
The other part has always been teaching movement, most specifically, barre and yoga.
I've noticed through the years that my relationship to working out became very goal-oriented, leaving little to no pleasure in the act of and often leaving me completely disconnected to my body of mentality of having to 'crush' it in order for it to be worth my time.
The deeper I explore the Pleasure Principle and the Divine Feminine, the more I realize how Movement has always been a way through which she spoke to me, reminding me how important the Presence-based Movement really is.
Questions To Consider:
How have you, or do you, describe your relationship to working out?
What are we 'working out' so much that we want to so deeply 'torture ourselves' for?
Can you, or are you, open to exploring Workouts, from a new, healthier, more satisfying, perspective?
Our bodies need change. Always. Nothing is constant.
The only thing constant in life is Change.
Nothing. Nothing in this life. So why are we trying to fit the way we eat and move in a box.
How do these come together?
Cycle-Synced Barre Workouts & Living
Lately, I’ve changed my approach to workouts, because I really do love movement, and a day without movement to me doesn’t feel right.
But that doesn’t mean I want to ‘Work – Out’ every day. Oftentimes, it means I want to work out because of all of the other amazing effects.
Movement can truly become our daily Medicine.
Think of all benefits that working out/moving can bring:
~ Balanced hormones – release of good-feeling hormones
~ Stronger Bones & Muscles
~ Healthier Mind
~ Stronger Heart & Emotional Field
~ Natural Energy
~ Sweating is a form of Cellular detox
~ A healthier approach to eating (When you move/workout, there is a higher chance you will eat healthier foods).
And so much more!
So I’ve created Cycle-Synced Barre workouts for women out there who feel disconnected, fatigued or overwhelmed by the typical yo-yo swings of workout routines.
And it works! It’s amazing!!
Benefits:
~ I feel allowed and supported by my Cycle.
~ I get more out of each workout because I accept where I am and work from there, instead of setting unrealistic goals and getting down at myself for not sustaining them long-term.
~ I’m not obsessed with ‘results’ other than how my workouts make me feel in the Present Moment.
I have also found the following:
~ Hormones are stabilized
~ Creativity is in Flow
~ Creation and Abundance in all forms (because when we move in Tune with Nature, Things begin to click in)
~ The Sexual Force is balanced and equally met
~ I feel healthy, full & Nourished by eating less and more aligned to my seasons
~ I no longer yo-yo with weight or dieting
~ I’ve given up my frustrating relationships with fitness workouts and body image because I now honor and embrace All that I am, here and now.
~ I honor the cycle and the season I’m in. I’m not working out because I have to workout out. I’m moving because it’s the healthiest thing I can do.
